I was looking for better replacement of my second Vonage telephone line to cut costs even more. I know Vonage is not expensive and calls withing US are usually fine, however when I tried to call to Russia I had a lot of problems with dropped phone conversations and medicore quality.
The research for different phone companies revealed Ebay owned company called Skype. They offer unlimited voice over IP phone calls for $5 per month (withing the US and Canada) and perfect rates for International calls as well.
Skype has some drawbacks:
- it needs computer turned on to be able to make and receive calls, however you could get special Skype phone that works without the needing of the PC (the one such as Philips VOIP8411B for instance)
- There is NO caller ID feature for outbound calls for US telephone numbers, thus people that use caller ID feature will see your call as "private" or "unknown", which could be a good thing sometimes :)
Skype probably will offer this feature someday..
So far the experience with Skype calls is very positive. As many other Skype users stated, Skype calls quality is usually better than "cell calls", however is lower than calls over landlines.
Please check other Skype features they offer on skype.com website
Another company that was considered is Yahoo. They have caller ID, however they are more expensive and the last time I checked they don't offer unlimited phone calls.
