Installation of SUSE Linux 10

13 Dec in SUSE

For those who frequently change their OS or just wanted to try out new SUSE.
Installation of SUSE Linux 10 that does not require any CDs (except bootable one)

Latest stable version of openSUSE Linux is available at www.opensuse.org/Released_Version page.

For x86 based machines download  Internet Installation Boot Image from suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/boot/boot.iso and burn  boot CD.

When
boot from the CD, SUSE installer will complain that it Could not find
the SUSE Linux Installation Source and will activate manual setup
program.
Press OK then select appropriate language and keyboard map.
Choose Start Installation or System, select Network, then FTP.
Select Automatic Configuration via DHCP or enter all IP settings manually if you don't have any DHCP running.
Enter IP Address of FTP server: 204.152.191.7 (mirrors1.kernel.org) or IP address of any SUSE mirrors that is close to your location. List of mirrors is available at www.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version
Enter directory where SUSE is located on the FTP server: /pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/
Depending
of the mirror it could be
/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/ (no /pub - check
beforehand!) and click OK. If everything was entered correctly it will
start downloading SUSE GUI installer.
Wait for: Loading Installation System (65570 KB)
Once
GUI started, select language (again!), accept License Agreement, click
Next and confirm driver activations for USB-storage, etc...
Select
correct time zone, choose your favorite desktop environment (KDE is the
best) and then just accept default settings as they could be changed
later anyway.
Hit Install button.
Depending on your ISP and
selected mirror installation process time may wary. It took me about an
hour to install the whole thing on my laptop.

Installation process is very easy and straightforward as my 12 year old son did it all by himself.
Possible
problems could be related to the wrong IP configuration or not
supporting your network card by Linux kernel which is very rare case.

Happy installing
