Preparing wood surface for decoration

1. Sealing Wood. Almost all wooden surfaces must be prepared. First you need to sand it with medium, 100 grit sandpaper and wipe it clean of any dust. Sanding the surface smooth is an essential  step before applying paint. Next you need to seal it with Acrylic Sealer or Multi-Purpose Sealer. Make sure the sealant is completely dry before applying a basecoat.

2. Applying a Paint Basecoat. Apply a basecoat of acrylic paint. Let dry. Then lightly sand the surface with medium, 100 or 200 grit sandpaper. Apply a second coat of acrylic paint and let it dry.

3. Decorate your surface.
Note: If you work with on an old piece of wooden furniture, you'll need a medium 80-100-grit sandpaper as well.  If you want  to stain the piece, you'll need to remove the old finish completely, which might require a strong stripping material as well as electric sander.
